The Smithsonian Gardens provides an exceptionally well-rounded array of experiences in its intern program thanks to the wide diversity of services it offers to the Smithsonian, the world's largest museum complex. Feb 15 The Link Foundation awards 12-week graduate student fellowships to conduct marine science research at the Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce. Students work in association with members of the Smithsonian professional research staff - either resident Marine Station investigators, or marine scientists from other Smithsonian entities who carry out a part of their research at the Station.

  Smithsonian Biodiversity Genomics Postdoctoral Fellowship Program — $48,000 per year
Dec 1 The program promotes collaborative research in these fields involving comparative genomic approaches such as phylogenomics, population genomics, metagenomics or transcriptomics, and have a component that involves significant bioinformatics analysis. Applicants must propose to conduct research in-residence for a period of 12 to 24 months. Applicants must have completed or be near completion of the Ph.D. Recipients who have not completed the Ph.D. at the time of application must provide proof of completion of the degree before the fellowship begins.

The fellowship allows one to perform research in residence headquartered at a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) location. A National Student Design Competition for Sustainability Focusing on People, Prosperity and the Planet
Dec 8 EPA's P3: People, Prosperity, and the Planet-Program is a unique college competition for designing solutions for a sustainable future. P3 offers students quality hands-on experience that brings their classroom learning to life. The competition has two phases. For the first phase of the competition, teams are awarded a $15,000 grant to develop their idea. They bring the design in April to the National Sustainable Design Expo in Washington DC to compete for the P3 Award and a grant of $90,000 to take their design to real world application.

  Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Fellowships for Undergraduate Environmental Study — Up to $20,700/yr plus $8,600 internship
Eligible students will receive support for their junior and senior years of undergraduate study and for an internship at an EPA facility during the summer between their junior and senior years.

  Dr. Nancy Foster Graduate Scholarships in Oceanography, Marine Biology and Maritime Archaeology — Up to $42,000
Dec 9 The scholarship program recognizes outstanding scholarship and encourages independent graduate level research -- particularly by female and minority students -- in oceanography, marine biology and maritime archaeology (including all science, engineering, social science and resource management of ocean and coastal areas). Prospective scholars do not need to be enrolled in a graduate program at the time of application, but must be admitted to a graduate level program in order to be awarded this scholarship.

Jan 29 Ph.D. candidates interested in the population dynamics of living marine resources and the development and implementation of quantitative methods for assessing their status can receive up to three years of funding. Ph.D. students in marine resource economics, concentrating on the conservation and management of living marine resources, can receive two years of funding.

  Coastal Services Center Coastal Management Fellowships — $34,000 per year
Jan 22 The Coastal Management Fellowship provides on-the-job education and training opportunities in coastal resource management and policy for postgraduate students and provide project assistance to state coastal zone management programs. The program matches postgraduate students with state coastal zone programs to work on projects proposed by the state and selected by the fellowship sponsor, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office for Coastal Management.   NOAA Coral Reef Management Fellowships
Jul 15 Applicants typically have a master's degree and two years of experience or a bachelor's degree and four years of experience. Jurisdictions may require additional or alternate skills, such as outreach and education experience. Although most applicants hold either Bachelor's or Master's degrees, applicants holding a PhD or JD are welcome to submit an application for consideration.
